Irrigation Chesapeake VA Information

If you are a lawn owner you have most likely wondered about automatic irrigation Chesapeake VA options that save you money and time watering your lawn. Most likely you currently use a garden hose connected to a sprinkler head and even a watering jug to water your plants. While this method of irrigation might work, they are time consuming and can end up wasting a lot of water. A solution to watering your lawn and plants while saving you time and precious free time is installing an automatic irrigation system. When life is happening all around you, every bit of time you have for family or free time is important when considering your summer lawn care.

Irrigation Chesapeake VA Choices

When you have a irrigation Chesapeake VA system installed you have a couple of choices to chose from. There is an above ground system and an under ground system of irrigation systems. The above ground system lays on the top of the ground and continuously drips water which then soaks into the ground providing water to the lawn and plants. The underground system is different in that it is basically invisible until it turns on. One on sprinkler heads throughout the system spray water in various patterns encompassing the watering area.

Both of these types of water delivery systems can save you time and money while producing a great looking and efficiently watered lawn. In addition, an automatic system can be set to water your lawn and plants in the early morning hours, which is recommended keeping lawn and plant roots healthier.

Watering your lawn in the morning gives the water a chance to soak into the soil before the day heats up. While watering in the evening might make your lawn and plants wet

Irrigation Chesapeake VA Options

Determining which of the two systems boils down to some simple considerations. For plant beds ask yourself if your plant arrangement stays the same year around? If you change your plant bed arrangements each year digging up and realigning your plant bed irrigation system each year will be cumbersome. However, if you mind seeing a drip irrigation hose on the top of the ground, the underground system will be best. In both instances and above ground drip system can be ran with a tiny hose that makes changing the arrangement easy while barely seeing it.

For lawns, the underground irrigation system works best as watering a large area with drip irrigation would require large amounts of hosing to lay across the grass. Underground systems are virtually invisible providing years of unobstructive, time saving and a cost effective water sprinkler system.

You will love discovering how easy it is to maintain your lawn and plants while enjoying a better looking and healthier yard. If you are looking to upgrade your landscaping to an automatic irrigation Chesapeake VA system call a local professional and get a free quote on a cost effective and time saving solution.

Summer Lawn Care Tips

Finally it is summer lawn care time which means days mean lots of outdoor fun in the sun. Most of us want to have a nice lawn all year, especially during the summer since we spend more time outdoors. Here are my tips for your summer lawn care during the summer months. Since you have been working hard and spending money in the spring to make your lawn the envy of the neighborhood, you want to keep it that way!

Summer Lawn Care Mowing

Summer months are hot and summer lawn care for these months is important. You should be mowing your at least three inches high or slightly higher which should assist in development of deeper grass root. If you maintain your lawn at a higher height, they will not have to grow leaves as fast and can use its energy to grow roots deeper and higher grass will give more shade to the ground to hold water longer. Your lawn will grow at a slower rate during the hotter months.

Summer Lawn Care Watering

You will need to water your lawn in the summer months to keep it green and from going dormant. Do not allow your lawn to go dormant before you start watering it, this will stress your lawn and deplete its energy reserves which will be used in the later seasons. You should be applying about 1 to 1 ½ inches of water per application (2 times a week). If you have an irrigation system, early in the morning is the best. No one wants to wake up early to drag the hose and sprinkler around! Early morning watering allows more of the water to soak in before the heat of the day. Watering at night may keep your lawn wet too long and may allow for diseases to kill all the hard work you done on your lawn. Do not water in the heat of the day when it is sunny and hot, this have a good opportunity to scald your lawn. Too much water is bad as well, so do not water when it is raining or during high winds. It is a waste of time and effort.

Summer Lawn Care Fertilization and Weed control

You should be continuing our Fertilization and Weed control program as part of your summer lawn care. Two applications should be done in the summer months. The first application should be at the beginning of summer and consist of slow release nitrogen and if weeds are present at the time of application, a spot application of broad-leaf weed control as needed. The second application should be in the late summer months and consist of a complete seasonal fertilizer and broad-leaf weed control, and apply insect control as needed.

Follow these tips and your summer lawn will be the hit of the neighborhood. It’s not hard to keep your lawn looking good all summer and these summer lawn care tips will give you a lawn you will love.

Spring season clean up is an important part of getting your lawn ready for summer.

Spring Season Lawn Care

As we get closer to Spring Season, our lawns start to show signs of growth again. We need to start planning on how we can get that lush green grass we’ve always wanted.

Some people put a lot of effort and money into their lawns and it does not look any better than last year (or maybe even worse). One factor that causes this is doing the right things at the wrong time of the year, which hurts our chances of getting a great looking lawn. Having a nice lawn does not come over night; it is something you have to work at it. Every Season of the year, we need to look and see what we need to do. Just watering your lawn a little in the Spring will not give you the lawn everyone in your neighborhood wants. Our Spring Season is where a lot of the new growth happens in our lawns. Preparing your lawn for the Spring Season does not mean wait until there is no chance of snow, but that there is little to no chance of snow. If you completed your Fall and Winter Season Lawn Maintenance Program, your Spring Lawn Maintenance Program will go smoothly. If you were not able to complete your Fall and Winter season Lawn Maintenance programs, then we start on your new lawn today!

First thing: Spring Clean-up

Everyone should have done all their heavy raking in the Fall season when most of the leaves fell from the trees which helps reduce thatch buildup. Well it is not over, in the Spring season, we need to finish the job. We need to remove all debris from our lawns, make sure you get down deep and not just take the stuff off the top. Using a garden rake or a handheld blower will work. This will greatly reduce any thatch buildup you missed in the Fall season. Additionally, it will show you any areas of our grass needs special attention. Once you removed all the debris from your lawn, it is time to ensure your lawn has a fighting chance for this year.

Lime Time

One common mistake homeowners do is adding too much or not enough lime on their lawns. Lime is intended to help with your PH balance and lower the acidity levels in your lawn.

So, how much lime to put down?? You need to have your soil checked annually. You can hire a company to do it for you or you can call your county agriculture extension and see what you need to do about sending them a sample. (If you sign up for our 6 application fertilizer program, it’s free.) The reports that come back to you will tell you how much lime you need. Just make sure you spread it evenly throughout your lawn.

Repairing bare spots: Overseeding

Regular seeding in the Fall Season is better since your grass will not be competing with the weeds. Spring Season overseeding is to repair any bare spots. If you plan on overseeding, then you should also think about using a fertilizer high in nitrogen with a slow release. About five weeks after overseeding, you may want to add a small amount of quick release nitrogen to your lawn which will give your new grass a great start. Just remember, adding any fertilizer to your lawn not only feeds your new grass seed; it also feeds your weeds. Fall time is great for most of your heavy fertilizing.

Weeds, Weeds, Weeds

We are trying to create a manicured lawn, so we need get rid of the weeds or at least greatly reduce them. Pulling weeds can be hard labor and will be required to be done several times over the growing season. A one day of pulling weeds will not be enough to keep weeds out of your lawn. And who wants to give up their weekends pulling weeds.

There are 2 types of chemical weed control you can use. The first weed control is pre-emergent herbicide. Pre emergence prevents weeds seeds from germinating later on in the Spring season, depending on the rate applied at, the pre emergence can last from 4 months up to 7 months. If you plan on overseeding your lawn, a pre-emergence will have effects on your grass seeds as well. It will reduce the amount of seed germination, if any will germinate. So be careful not to get this on your new grass seeds. The second chemical weed control is a post-emergent herbicide. A post-emergent herbicide can be applied to control all visible weeds but will not provide any long term control of weeds during the summer. However, spring over seeding can be done approximately 3-4 weeks after the post-emergent herbicide application is done. Post-emergent herbicides will give approximately 4-6 week control on weeds but will not prevent new growth, like a pre emergence weed application.

We are heading into the Spring Season and I did not cover all the seasons. I am planning on writing, Summer, Fall, and Winter seasons as well. We need to understand all the seasons better so you can make your lawn greener in less time. One question that always pops up is “When is the best season to start to get a well manicured lawn”? There is no time like the present. No reason to wait around for the perfect season, the best season is the current one. So, it is time to get started on your lawn today. With that said, please do not add grass seed to your lawn and add water expecting things to change. You may have thought it was impossible to get a plush green lawn, but following these guidelines will help you greatly reduce your time needed to get there. While getting a green carpet lawn is only half the battle, keeping it is the other. Once you become the envy of the neighborhood, continue the hard work to keep your lawn maintenance program current.

We Provide Mulch

Mulch or ground cover is the backbone to any perfectly manicured lawn. Though many people never think about ground cover, it is an important part of the life cycle to good lawn care. When you curl up in bed to go to sleep at night, you might pull your favorite comforter or blanket up to keep in the warmth and regulate temperature. Likewise, ground cover is a layer of organic or inorganic material that is spread on top of the soil in flowerbeds and around trees. Not only does mulch look good, it is full of nutrients and has many important properties such as preventing soil erosion, maintaining moisture, and preventing weed growth.

In the summer time ground cover can regulate temperature and keep soil moisture more constant. In the winter it can act much like your down comforter does to insulate plant roots from the cold. Mulch can also absorb rainfall and, by using nature, make it more cost effective to keep plants watered.

Kinds of Mulch

There are hundreds of varieties of ground cover and they are available in the colors of the rainbow. The organic ground cover most widely used is wood chips. Wood chip ground cover comes in any color and can also come dyed to accommodate the most extravagant taste. Inorganic ground cover is typically rubber made from recycled tires or plastic. Rock and gravel can also be used as ground cover. So whatever your taste, to make your landscaping look its best, there is a mulch to fit the application.

Typical Mulch Applications

Typically, mulch is applied at the beginning of the spring before weeds have a chance to grow and before flowers are planted. By applying ground covering at the beginning of the growing season, the heat it maintains helps early plants with growth. Throughout the growing season covering for the ground is often reapplied as needed due to erosion. During the summer months, ground covering helps to reduce soil temperature, assisting plants with cooler temperatures throughout the day during harsh summer months.

Mulch Needs

Whatever your mulch needs in Chesapeake, Lenard’s Lawn Care Services has you covered. We include mulch in our yearly services or we can deliver and install mulch even if you are not a part of our regular service. If you need an expert assessment of your mulch needs, we would enjoy the opportunity to visit your home and provide you with that.
